Ricardo Mariano is a Software Engineer at Arria NLG. He joined the company in 2015 and has worked on numerous NLG applications, such as Recount. Originally from Manila, Ricardo brings a wealth of knowledge having studied at the University of the Philippines with a degree in Computer Engineering.1. What does your role entail as software engineer?
I help shape the next generation of Arria products. I’m part of a development team in Sydney, which designs and implements applications that use Arria’s NLG technology. We all have a hand in making decisions around the products’ direction.
2. How did you end up working for Arria NLG?
I found the role while searching StackOverflow Careers, and was interested in working with language and the language technology that Arria had. When I started, we were a small team, but we grew quickly.
3. What excites you about Arria’s NLG technology?
I like the idea of this NLG technology interpreting data into human-like communication, and I’m also very excited at the prospect of Arria making NLG accessible to the wider public. In the future, we want other people to be empowered to get their data to talk to them using Arria’s NLG technology.
4. Which product you are most proud of and why?
Recount, which is a product aimed at helping businesses understand their finances, is in my opinion a good example of what NLG can do with data.
5. What is the best part about working for Arria NLG?
Working at Arria NLG feels both serious and fun to me. I get to be the occasional office DJ, we all get a day to work from home if we want to, and in general I don’t feel overworked. At the same time, I get to work with people who are really serious about their craft (and you can tell!), people who have a genuine want to make things better.
